Being a Pharmacist, It is not unusual to be in a situation where a physician prescribes some drug with its brand name and you need a reference to find out what its generic name is. This may not be applicable in other countries but in some countries like ours if we do not have the brand drug, and we have the generic one, then we dispense that. There is no violation of ethical practices here but some debate that brand drugs are more effective than generic drugs for a number of reasons like quality of production and packaging material... But every drug produced will not go to public unless it passes the pharmacopoeias standards so I believe it is okay to dispense generic drugs if the prescribed brand drug is not available.

So the problem with brand drugs is that they are plenty. One generic drug can have a number of brand name and so it sometimes creates problems in identifying what a certain brand name of a drug stands for what generic drug - if you want to dispense the generic. It is not only for this reason that you want to know the generic name of some brand drug. It is also for the reason that you want to know what the functions and side effects of a certain drug are when dispensing that generic drug.
